Hearing protection comes first, before any technique. Sustained tones are fatiguing and sneaky — a sine at a moderate volume does not feel loud the way a kick drum does, but the exposure accumulates the same way. The safe workflow is to start at the lowest volume that is audible, raise it only as far as the task demands, and keep sessions short. Prefer the number input over the slider when precision matters. A slider is great for sweeping and exploring, but the human finger cannot reliably land on 440.00 Hz, let alone a 1 Hz offset. For anything that needs an exact reference — matching a tuning fork, setting a beat frequency, testing a specific test tone — type the value and let the slider display reflect it. The number input and the slider are always synchronized, so you can explore coarsely and then lock in the exact value.

Sweep deliberately when testing speakers or headphones. A quick up-and-down sweep reveals the character of a transducer: where it resonates, where it rolls off, where it distorts. The practice is to move slowly through the range in thirds — low, mid, high — with a sine wave at moderate volume, listening for how the sound changes rather than how loud it gets. A speaker that sounds boomy around 120 Hz or thin above 8 kHz tells you exactly which frequencies to be suspicious of in the music you mix or the gear you buy.

Expect the browser's gesture gate and plan for it. Audio cannot start until the user interacts with the page, so the first click must be the Start button (or any click that establishes a gesture). If you click Start and hear nothing, check the volume, check that you actually clicked, and confirm your browser has not muted the tab — all three are common and all three are quick. Because the AudioContext is created inside the click, a fresh page needs that one interaction before sound can flow; after that, frequency and volume changes are instant.

Listen for quality problems rather than assuming them. Clicks and pops on start and stop indicate a missing or too-fast gain ramp; the tool ramps exponentially over tens of milliseconds to avoid them, but a heavily-loaded system can still glitch. Distortion, buzzing, or a sound that changes with the volume knob often means the speaker is pushed past its limits or the audio driver is resampling. Harshness at high frequencies is normal above 10 kHz but should be gentle; if it is painful, the level is too high for the device.

Finally, keep the generator in the loop as a calibration reference, not a one-off. Musicians retune every session; audio engineers re-check monitor levels when the room changes; anyone verifying gear keeps a known tone handy.
