A precision chronometer is only as good as the person pressing the button. The hardware and software can measure to the millisecond, but every timing session still passes through a human thumb, a fixed course, and a plan. These best practices cover the discipline that separates a trustworthy lap table from a noisy one — consistent marking, deliberate pacing analysis, and clean data management.
Decide your split points before you start and hold them fixed. A swimmer decides to mark every wall, a runner every kilometer, a tester every function call — and then never improvises mid-session. Consistent split points are what make lap-to-lap comparisons valid, because the intervals you are comparing all span identical physical distance. Changing the split points halfway through a workout produces a lap table whose numbers cannot be compared against each other, no matter how precise the timer.
Develop one repeatable button technique. Whether you use a thumb on the edge of the screen or a finger hovering over the button, use the same motion every time. The reaction-time offset — roughly 150 to 300 milliseconds per press — is roughly constant for a practised technique, which means it cancels out when you compare laps. Fumbling for the button, using a different finger, or reaching across the screen adds variable delay that shows up as fake "slow" laps that were actually just late presses.
Mark the lap at the moment of the event, not a moment later. The classic error is pressing Lap when the runner crosses the line, rather than as they cross it — a difference of a couple of hundred milliseconds that corrupts that one split. In practice this means watching the athlete, not the screen: your eyes belong on the finish point, and the thumb can find the button by touch. The display updates itself; you do not need to watch it to time accurately.
Use cumulative time for positioning and lap time for effort. The cumulative column tells you where you stand in the overall session — past your best cumulative position at this point or behind it. The lap column tells you how the most recent interval felt in isolation. When a workout is going sideways, the cumulative reading identifies the point where it turned; the lap readings identify how you got there. Reading both columns together is the core of pacing analysis.
Compare best, worst, and average deliberately. The three summary numbers are diagnostic, not decorative. A large spread between best and worst lap — more than a few percent — usually means pacing variance: a first lap that was too fast, a middle lap that drifted, or an obstacle that broke rhythm. An average close to the best indicates even, repeatable effort. When you review a session, ask why the worst lap happened, because that single interval usually holds the training lesson.
Export before you reset. The Reset button clears everything instantly with no undo, and a good session should never be lost to a mis-tap. Build the habit of pressing Export CSV at the end of every session — the download costs nothing and doubles as your training log. Over months, the accumulated CSV files become a trend dataset: average laps drifting downward, best laps improving, and the lap-by-lap detail that answers "how did that race actually unfold?" long after the feeling has faded.
Standardize the conditions you record alongside the times. A lap time is meaningless without context — was it a windy day, a treadmill, a sprint or a recovery run? If you keep a log, append the date, the venue, and the effort level to each exported file. This transforms the CSV from a column of numbers into a research dataset, and it is the difference between data you can act on and data you can only admire.
Finally, calibrate your expectations for a manual timer. Absolute times will always include your reaction latency, so they will differ from chip-timed or camera-timed results — typically by a few tenths of a second. That does not make manual splits useless; it means their value lies in the comparisons: lap versus lap within a session, and session versus session across weeks.
