Simon Says — How to Play & Train Your Memory
Goal: watch the sequence of flashing pads, then repeat it in the same order. Each round adds one step, and the game ends at your first mistake — your score is the length of your longest run.
Three tips for longer runs
- Say the colors out loud as they flash ("blue, red, yellow") — verbal encoding survives longer than visual memory alone.
- Chunk in groups of three or four. Recall "B-R-Y / G-B-R" as two chunks, not six items.
- Use positions, not colors. Remembering the physical path (left, top, right) gives your hand a motor plan, which is more reliable under pressure.
FAQ
What is a good Simon score?
Most players reach 6–9 steps; chunking reliably pushes runs past 12. Working-memory research places typical adult span at 5–9 items, so every point beyond 10 is technique.
Does speed increase?
In classic Simon the flash tempo quickens as the sequence grows, adding time pressure to memory load.
