Hangman — How to Play & Guess Smarter
Goal: reveal the hidden word one letter at a time before the drawing completes. Each wrong letter adds a stroke; solve the word first and you win the round.
Guess order that wins
- Vowels early. Start with E, then A, O, I — nearly every English word has at least two of them.
- Common consonants next: T, N, S, R, H, L before anything exotic.
- Use the word length. A 3-letter gap with E and T placed is almost always "THE" mid-phrase; a single blank between two consonants is usually a vowel.
FAQ
What are the best first letters?
By letter frequency in English, E-T-A-O-I-N covers over 40% of all letters used — guessing in roughly that order maximizes information per mistake.
Any strategy for hard mode?
Think in word patterns: match the revealed letters against common endings (-ING, -TION, -IGHT) before committing to rare letters.
